Chris Coles’ Quest Continues With “Love Deamon Song Cycle”

One of the most quoted lines from Naruto, the Japanese anime epic, is “Hard work is worthless for those that don’t believe in themselves.” Cleveland-born, Akron saxophonist and educator Chris Coles is such a “Naruto” fan that he wrote an album-length work, Love Deamon Song Cycle, released last Friday on Hidden Cinema Records, about it.

But when he takes the stage at BOP STOP Saturday with his Gleam ensemble, he’ll do more than just play music inspired by the Japanese anime epic, he’ll embody everything that quote represents.

When the protean Brazilian producer/arranger/composer/instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal died in September at age 89, obituary writers were challenged to find someone to compare him to (maybe Prince came closest). Hermeto, as he was invariably known, summed up his musical philosophy as tudo é som, “all is sound.” No wonder his nickname was o Bruxo, the Sorcerer.

As a student at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, pianist Ben Tweedt came under Hermeto’s spell, an enchantment that inspired an evening of the master’s compositions at BOP STOP Saturday evening.

This weekend finds the in-demand sideman, dependable session musician and busy bandleader in the familiar setting of Hingetown’s Bop Stop with his Alla Boara project for a two-night engagement that will be recorded for audio and video release.
